List of Artists
Jaap Blonk (Netherlands) is a prolific composer and a vocalist specializing in the performance of sound poetry, supported by a powerful stage presence and an almost childlike freedom in improvisation. He has performed in many European countries, as well as in the U.S., Canada, Indonesia, South Africa and Latin America.
Karen Christopher (Chicago) is a performer who worked with Chicago Actors Ensemble and the Neo-Futurists before joining Goat Island Performance Group in 1990, with whom she continues to perform and teach.
John Corbett (Chicago) is a writer, critic, musician, producer, and curator. He writes regularly for downbeat, produces a number of recording projects including the Unheard Music Series imprint on Atavistic Records, and operates the Chicago art gallery Corbett vs. Dempsey.
Richard Curtis (Chicago) is a vocal performance artist whose work has been heard at various venues in Chicago, including ERP 3030, Spareroom, and Sound Canopy, as well as projects in Canada, the Netherlands, and Kenya. Curtis has also conducted lectures and workshops for all ages on vocal performance.
Anthony Elms (Chicago) is an artist and writer. He is the editor of WhiteWalls and assistant director of Gallery 400 at University of Illinois in Chicago.
Carol Genetti (Chicago) is a vocalist focused on improvisation and the pure sonic exploration of the human voice. Her work is grounded in extended techniques, but also contains traditional vocal styles such as jazz, Hindustani and Bulgarian folk singing, creating a distinct non-verbal sound palette that has a provocative depth.
Susan Giles (Chicago) is an installation artist best known for her video works that fragment and re-assemble everyday experiences. Her work has recently been shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Spencer Brownstone Gallery in New York, and Galerie de Multiples in Paris. She has received several grants, including a 1998 Fulbright Grant to conduct research on the intersection of tourism and culture in Bali. She is represented by Kavi Gupta Gallery in Chicago.
Dan Grzeca (Chicago) is a Chicago painter and illustrator. When not working on fine art, he has designed and screenprinted concert posters for Peter Brötzmann, Vandermark 5, The Fall, Mats Gustafsson, The Ex, The Melvins and many more.
Gary Hill (Seattle) is one of the most important contemporary artists investigating the relationships between words, sounds, and electronic images -- an inquiry that has dominated the video art of the past decade. Originally trained as a sculptor, Hill began working in video in 1973 and has produced a major body of single-channel videotapes and video installations that includes some of the most significant works in the field of video art.
Richard Hull (Chicago) has been exhibiting his paintings and drawings for 25 years. Part of his recent artistic output includes a painting and music collaboration with Ken Vandermark called The Pintura Series.
John Kannenberg (Chicago) creates quietly reflective works in both image and sound that blur the boundaries between intention and accident. His works deal with a variety of themes including primal natural forces, spirituality and mindful contemplation, melancholy and nostalgia, abstracted narratives, and the confluence of sonic and visual art.
Lotta Melin (Sweden) has established herself internationally since 1995 as one of Eurrope's most active and accomplished dance improvisers ("instant choreographer") in her numerous collaborations with musicians and composers in the USA, Asia and Europe.
Malin Lindelow (Chicago) is an artist originally from Stockholm, Sweden. She explores issues of language and displacement in writing, performance, sound, video and installation. In recent years, her obsession with moss has produced a body of work echoing its rhizomatic nature -- a growing network of tangents akin to the structure of memory and how we place ourselves in our worlds.
CJ Mitchell (Chicago) is Executive Director of Links Hall and runs the False Walls CD label. He joined Goat Island Performance Group in 1998 as manager, administrator, and associate fundraiser.
Morganville is a performance art collaboration between Trevor Martin (Chicago) and Kym Olsen (Tucson) who have been working together since 1995. Relying on the basic elements of language and movement, they have developed a direct yet sophisticated and emotionally charged style of performance.
Bob Snyder (Chicago) is a composer whose current interests include musical textures involving the sounds of living organisms. Recent work involves the use of samples of nocturnal insect sounds, and the synthesis of artificial birdsongs.
Laetitia Sonami (Oakland) is a composer, performer and sound installation artist who designs and builds her own instruments. Her lady's glove, a sophisticated computer controller of her own design, allows her to control sounds, mechanical devices, and lights in real-time.
Wenwah Ts'ao (Chicago) is a filmmaker born in Taiwan, Republic of China. Her short films employ a variety of image sources, cinematic techniques, editing strategies, and sound-image juxtaposition to explore metaphors and meanings of perception and identity. She teaches film and video production at Columbia College.
Ken Vandermark (Chicago) is a prolific saxophonist and composer whose stature in the worlds of jazz and improvised music continues to grow. He is engaged in numerous recording and performing projects internationally, and is a recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship.
